Holograph manuscript correspondence, accounts, invoices, and legal documents, 1671-1704 and undated. Legal documents include a bond posted by Elihu Yale before leaving for India, printed and completed in manuscript, 1671; an agreement signed by Elihu Yale relating to his marriage to Catharine Hynmers, 1680; his commission by the East India Company, 1686; documents relating to his appointment and tenure as governor of Fort Saint George; and his commission as high sheriff of Denbighshire, ca. 1704, and other documents relating to his service as high sheriff. Also present is an undated, printed oath of allegiance to the East India Company. Accounts and invoices, 1680-1700 and undated, include accounts kept at Fort Saint George and accounts relating to his activities in the diamond trade. Correspondence, 1674-1698, consists of letters written to Elihu Yale by David Yale, Theophilus Yale, Richard Elford, Thomas Gomersall, and O. Neale; also present is a letter written by Elihu Yale to Richard Elford.

In 1671 Elihu Yale was appointed a writer in the East India Company. He was sent to Madras, India in 1672, and became a member of the council and second in command to the governor. In 1687 Yale became president and governor of Fort Saint George. He returned to England in 1699, where he carried on trade in diamonds.
